This unit is responsible for developing and coordinating
state policy on rail transportation issues, and for
administering the Department’s rail and freight service
programs. The unit is also responsible for developing
and coordinating state policy on bicycle and pedestrian
transportation issues and for providing technical assistance
statewide on bike and pedestrian issues.
The responsibilities of this unit include
preparation of the State Rail Plan and administration of federally funded
Local Rail Freight Assistance grants. The staff coordinates state rail
activities with the Office of the Governor and other state agencies.
The unit serves as a central source of information and assistance to
the public on rail transportation issues and on bicycle and pedestrian
transportation issues.
The staff provides technical assistance
for the development of the Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan,
Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, and Transportation Enhancement
Programs.
The staff represents the Department in
AASHTO rail activities, including participation in the Standing Committee
on Rail Transportation (SCORT) and participation in activities of the
Transportation Research Board related to rail transportation.
This unit also houses the state bicycle
and pedestrian coordinator. This person is responsible for providing
policy direction, advice, technical assistance, and support statewide
on bicycle and pedestrian issues.
