WELCOME TO KDOT'S SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

The Kansas Department of Transportation is pleased to assist School Districts in providing safe zones around schools. Please take a moment to look through this website and read about some of the programs that KDOT offers to improve safety and traffic flow in school zones.

KDOT is pleased to be involved in the Safe Routes to Schools Program. Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) is a federal reimbursement program that provides funding for infrastructural projects and educational activities that assist Cities, Counties, and School Districts to enable children to walk or bicycle to school more safely. Funding will be provided to Local Public Authorities and School Districts, working in cooperation, on a competitive basis. Applications and supporting materials are mailed to Local Public Authorities; School Districts, Tribal Governments, Consulting Firms, and other interested parties. The application materials are also available on the Safe Routes to Schools link of this website.

KDOT also invites School District staff to take part in one of our School Crossing Guard "Train the Trainer" Workshops. State legislation has suggested (but not required) that all school crossing guards be trained uniformly. KDOT will be providing "Train the Trainer" workshops for employees that supervise school crossing guards.

KDOT also manages the School Zone Program that provides towns with a population of less than 20,000 with improvements to their school zones in the form of signage and pavement markings (crosswalks). You can find more information about this program on the School Zone Program link of this website.

You will also find on this website the School Zone Toolbox. The Toolbox is a great resource for information about school zones.

Finally, KDOT can provide Local Public Authorities and school districts with School Siting Consultation. If your district is considering the location of a new school, please contact us. We can assist you by providing consultation on street and parking lot traffic flow, bike and pedestrian facilities, and speed limits.
