Southeast Kansas Rural Grant
State and local law enforcement will be utilizing a special federal grant to step up enforcement of Kansas seat belt laws as part of a 10-county enhanced enforcement effort.
The year-long enforcement blitz is designed to promote a higher level of seat belt usage in rural areas of the state. Kansas Department of Transportation officials noted that seat belt usage rates in the Southeastern part of the state are well below the state usage rate. Counties included in the campaign are Allen, Courbon, Cherokee, Cowley, Crawford, Labette, Montgomery, Neosho, Wilson and Woodson.
The rural seat belt enforcement campaign is funded by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is being coordinated by KDOT's Traffic Safety Office, in cooperation with state and local law enforcement and other groups. It is part of the federal-state "Click It. Or Ticket." seat belt enforcement and advocacy campaign designed to save lives.

Statistics: In Kansas, the seat belt usage rate increased from 75 percent in 2007 to 77.3 percent in 2008. However, the state still lags behind the national rate of 83 percent. An even more revealing statistic shows that 61 percent of those killed in passenger vehicle crashes in Kansas during 2007 were not buckled up, while 89 percent of those who were unharmed were using seatbelts.
