| Title 23 of the United States Code dealing with
transportation requires communities with a population
of greater than 50,000 to have a Metropolitan
Planning Organization (MPO). The MPO’s are responsible for
coordinating the transportation planning
efforts for those communities. In Kansas the MPO’s include: the Mid-America
Regional Council for the Kansas City area, the Lawrence-Douglas County
Metropolitan Planning Office, the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization,
the Metropolitan Topeka Planning Organization, as well as the St. Joseph
Area Transportation Study Organization which serves the northeast corner of Kansas.
