| This unit is primarily responsible for the administration of public
transportation programs funded by the Federal Transit
Administration (FTA) and KDOT. Both the federal and state
programs are designed to help meet the transportation
needs of elderly persons, persons with disabilities, and
the general public.
The unit is responsible
for advising incorporated private non-profit organizations,
county governments, non-urbanized city governments (under
50,000 pop.), Indian Nations, and private for-profit operators
of the availability of public transportation funds. This
unit reviews requests to fund programs (most of which
involve purchase or replacement of vehicles), conducts
yearly inspections of vehicles, monitors grantees to ensure
compliance with federal and state regulations, and administers
all programs related to public transportation. Public
transportation funds are also used to assist with operating
expenses, finance communications and computer equipment,
obtain wheelchair lifts, and support research projects.
