Mileage and Travel - Terminology

• Route Classification - Priority ranking for highways in Kansas.
• A - Interstate Highways, including the Kansas Turnpike
• B - Routes that serve as the most important statewide and inter-state corridors for travel. The routes serve distinct trip movements since they are widely spaced throughout the State. On major sections of the routes traffic volumes are relatively constant. A significant number of out-of-state vehicles use Class B, and trips are typically very long.
• C - Defined as arterials, these routes are closely integrated with Class A and B routes in service to all parts of the State. Major locations that are not on an A or B are connected to them by a C route. Average trip lengths are typically long.
• D - These routes provide access to arterials and serve small urban areas not on a higher-class route. These routes are important for inter-county travel.
• E - Primarily for local travel, these routes typically carry short trips. Class E routes are used to connect rural residents with other routes or to provide access to small towns in the area.


• Corporate - within city limits
• Non-Corporate - outside city limits


• Functional Classification - grouping of streets and highways according to the character of service.
• Arterials - routes supporting high-speed, long-distance travel with few intersections and access points.
• Interstate - Freeways designated as Interstate by AASHTO
• Freeway - divided route with interchanges
• Expressway - divided route with surface intersections
• Collector - route supporting moderate speeds for shorter travel distances with street intersections and some driveway access points.
• Local - route for low-speed local travel providing access to homes, farms and businesses.


• Rural - places with population less than 5,000.
• Urban - places with population 5,000 or greater.
• Small Urban - places with population between 5,000 and 50,000
• Small Urbanized - places with population between 50,000 and 200,000
• Large Urbanized - places with population over 200,000


• City Connecting Link - Interstate, US or Kansas route mileage within city limits.


• DVMT - Daily Vehicle-Miles of Travel, a measure of road usage representing the number of road users and how far they travel.
