Welcome to Frieght & Rail Transportation

The freight and rail unit works on developing and coordinating state policy on multimodal freight and rail transportation issues, analyzes motor carrier and rail freight transportation in the state and administers the Rail Service Improvement Program (RSIP) that provides grants to railroads, shippers, and local units of government for track rehabilitation and construction. Additionally, the freight and rail unit prepares and updates the State Rail Plan and Statewide Multimodal Freight Plan.

Rail Service Improvement Program

An estimated $10 million in funding is available to award projects that enhance safety, promote economic efficiency, and sustainability to the state’s rail network.

KDOT Kansas Statewide Freight and Rail Plans

NOTICE: The Kansas Department of Transportation has completed its update to the state’s Freight Plan (SFP). The SFP will serve as a guiding document for KDOT, Kansas communities, and other partners and stakeholders that wish to include and promote infrastructure that supports the state’s freight transportation network. The 2023 Kansas State Freight Plan can be accessed below.
