Johnson County - K-7 mill and overlay project

K-7 mill and overlay project started June 1, weather permitting, from K-10 to Kansas River. Project is expected to be completed mid-Aug. Traffic will be controlled with daily lane and ramp closures, flashing arrow boards, traffic cones and signage. Travelers should expect delays.  Koss Construction Company of Topeka is the contractor on $3.1 million project.



Johnson County

Mill and overlay on K-10 in Johnson County to begin Monday, August 10

An asphalt mill and overlay project on K-10 in Johnson County to begin, Monday, August 10, weather permitting.  Work will occur from K-7 to I-435, eastbound and westbound K-10 will be intermittently reduced to one lane of traffic and ramps will be intermittently closed. Work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays as needed. The project is expected to be completed in early October.

Traffic will be controlled using lane and ramp closures, portable message signs, arrow boards, signage and traffic cones. Motorists should expect travel delays. Koss Construction Company of Topeka is the contractor on the $2.25 million project.

Patch and overlay on I-435

A mill and overlay project on northbound and southbound I-435, to begin, Monday, June 8, weather permitting.  Work will start at K-10, going north to Midland Drive and includes the ramps at I-435 and K-10, I-435 and 87th Street and I-435 and Midland Drive. The project is expected to be completed by early November.

Work hours will be 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 7 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, and 7 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.Traffic will be controlled with intermittent lane and ramp closures, lane width restrictions, flashing arrow boards, traffic cones and signage. Motorists should expect travel delays. Superior Bowen of Kansas City, Mo. is the contractor on the $9 million project.

U.S. 56 and 199th Street intersection and safety improvements

EB & WB U.S. 56 at 199th St. intersection and safety improvements. Work will occur during daylight hours and is expected to be complete in early October. Access to northbound Sunflower Rd. and southbound 199th St. from US-56 will be closed for the duration of the project.

Intersection improvements will add right and left turn lanes for eastbound U.S. 56 and a left turn lane for westbound U.S. 56.  Safety improvements include creating 10-foot shoulders and shallower embankment slopes.

Widening I-35 from 3 lanes to 4 lanes at 75th St.

A lane widening project on I-35 from south of 67th Street to south of 75th Street is ongoing, weather permitting. Majority of the work will occur during daylight, however, night work is expected during particular phases of construction. The project is expected to be completed in late November.

It is expected on Sept. 8 that the SB off ramp to 75th St. will open and NB I-35 on ramp to 75th will close. Access to 75th St. from SB East Frontage Rd. will close. (Detour route: 67th St. to Antioch to 75th St.) The SB on ramp from 75th St. will remain closed until approx. Aug. 21.


Wyandotte County

Mill and asphalt overlay on I-435 in Wyandotte County

A mill and asphalt overlay project on northbound and southbound I-435 in Wyandotte County, to begin, Saturday, July 18, weather permitting.  Work will occur from the north bridge approach of the Kansas River, north to mile marker 16, about one-half mile north of Leavenworth Road. The project is expected to be completed by the end of October.

Work hours will be Monday to Friday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. The first three to four weeks of the project will include asphalt and concrete patching before the overlay. Traffic will be controlled with intermittent lane and ramp closures, lane width restrictions, flashing arrow boards, traffic cones and signage. Motorists should expect travel delays.

Koss Construction Co., of Topeka is the contractor on the $8.4 million project.

 

Overlay and bridge work on I-635 till mid-December 2020

Overlay and bridge work projects on I-635 in WYCO, to begin, Monday, June 15, weather permitting.  Work will occur from Foster Drive, north to the K-5 exit. The project is expected to be completed in mid-December.

Bridge work projects include mill, patch and overlay on the I-635 bridge over 43rd Street and joint repair work on the I-635 bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railyard, located between Kansas Avenue and Swartz Road. Work will occur from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, and Saturdays as needed.

The overlay project on northbound and southbound I-635 will start with pothole patching at the south end and move north. Work will occur from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday to Friday and 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Traffic will be controlled with intermittent lane closures, flashing arrow boards, traffic cones and signage. Motorists should expect travel delays. Superior Bowen of Kansas City, Mo. is the contractor on the $12.6 million projects.

I-70 Truck Staging Area at Turner Diagonal Closed till Nov. 2020

Eastbound I-70 Truck Staging Area between 78th St and Turner Diagonal in KCK will be CLOSED as part of the Turner Diagonal Interchange Reconstruction Project beginning 2/17/20. It will re-open by Nov, 2020.

Lewis & Clark Viaduct - June 10 update

Girder spans are being unloaded and installed at this time. Project is expected to be completed, or at least open to traffic, by the end of the year, but several potential delays could happen in the next couple of months.

Completed Projects (2020)

Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties - US 73 mill and overlay project

U.S. 73 mill and overlay project is expected to begin June, weather permitting, from just north of State Ave. to Seven Mile Creek in Lansing. Project is expected to be completed in late Aug. Traffic will be controlled with daily lane closures, flashing arrow boards, traffic cones and signage. Flaggers may be used at the intersections. Travelers should expect delays. Superior Bowen of Kansas City, Mo. is the contractor on the $3.6 million project.

Southbound I-35 bridge lengthening at 151st Street, Olathe

Phase Two of a project to lengthen the I-35 southbound bridge north of 151st Street in Olathe is ongoing, weather permitting. The project still has some work going on under the bridge, but traffic is getting through.  Last year, Phase One of this project lengthened the I-35 northbound bridge.

Traffic will be instructed to use East Old U.S. 56 and controlled with barriers, traffic cones, signage, arrow boards and digital message boards. Alternative routes are suggested.

Johnson County - Mill and overlay on U.S. 56/Shawnee Mission Parkway

A mill and overlay project on U.S. 56/Shawnee Mission Parkway in Johnson County, to begin, Monday, June 8, weather permitting.  Work will occur from Johnson Drive to the Missouri state line. The project was complete June 15.

COMPLETED: U.S. 69 over Merriam Lane/Turkey Creek

Bridge repairs on U.S. 69 over Merriam Lane and Turkey Creek in Wyandotte County, including replacing approach pavement, replacing expansion joints and repairing and replacing bearings. Project started July 15 and was completed in December 2020.


COMPLETED: Sunflower Road over I-35

Bridge replacement of Sunflower Rd over I-35 and improvements to ramps. The project began in April and was completed in December.


COMPLETED: K-7 over K-10 bridge repairs

Bridge repairs on both the northbound and southbound bridges of K-7 over K-10. The project began in August and was completed in December.

COMPLETED: U.S. 69 bridge over I-35

Bridge repairs on U.S. 69 over I-35 in Lenexa. The project replaced the bridge deck, rehabilitated the bridge and reconstructed pavement on U.S. 69 from the southbound I-35 to southbound U.S. 69 exit through the southern approach slab of the bridge. The project began in August and was completed in November.

COMPLETED: I-635 and I-70

The I-635 bridge over Speaker Road (just north of K-32) will have traffic in both directions reduced to two lanes utilizing the shoulder for repair. This will also require the closures of the ramps from eastbound and westbound I-70 to southbound I-635, and the ramps from eastbound and westbound K-32 to northbound I-635 for the duration of the project. The detours for these closures will be via I-70 to the north and I-35 to the south then to 18th St/US 69 to K-32. This closure will be in effect through November, 2019.

I-70 eastbound will have pavement patching and smoothness grinding take place from the Rock Quarry Rd. to just east of 38th St., requiring the roadway to be reduced to one lane nightly beginning July 22nd. This closure is in effect through November, 2019.


COMPLETED: I-35 from 95th to 135th (night work)

Concrete patching, milling and asphalt overlay repair project on I-35 will begin on Monday, May 6, weather permitting, from 95th Street south to 135th Street.

Lane reductions will take place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. throughout the project area. Some Sunday work may be necessary. Ramps will be closed intermittently for milling and overlay during the repair work, and there will be no signed detours. Motorists are urged to allow extra time to their travel schedule or use an alternate route. The work is scheduled to be completed by late October.


COMPLETED: Centennial bridge (K-92)

Repairs to the Centennial Bridge (Leavenworth County) on K-92 over the Missouri River began on July 22. Traffic was reduced to one lane, utilizing temporary traffic controls. The project was completed on September 6.


COMPLETED: U.S. 69 bridge over 151st

Southbound US-69 will be reduced to one lane in the vicinity of 151st Street for bridge repairs. The project is expected to be completed by mid-August.


COMPLETED: K-10 mill and overlay

Asphalt mill and overlay eastbound and westbound K-10 from Douglas County to K-7. Daily lane and ramp closures throughout the duration of the project which is expected to be completed by mid-September.


COMPLETED: U.S. 69 patching, mill, and overlay from 103rd to Blue Valley Split (night work)

Beginning 6/27/19 northbound and southbound US-69 will be reduced to one lane nightly from 7:30 pm-5:30 am from 103rd Street to the Blue Valley split for pavement patching followed by a mill and overlay. Exit and entrance ramps will be closed intermittently during those same times. The project is expected to be completed by late July.


COMPLETED: I-435 Pavement repairs

Northbound I-435 two left lanes closed from 87th Street to Midland Dr. for pavement repairs. Estimated completion date: August 9.


COMPLETED: K-10 bridge over Woodland

Bridge repair on WB K-10 bridge over Woodland Road. The westbound entrance ramps from Renner Blvd to K-10 and Ridgeview Rd to K-10 will be closed and will remain closed through the duration of the project. Westbound K-10 will be reduced to one lane of traffic from Ridgeview Rd to Woodland Rd through the duration of the project. Traffic wanting to access westbound K-10 from Renner or Ridgeview should use College Blvd or Prairie Star Pkwy. The project is expected to be completed by late July.


Projects to be continued in Spring 2020


I-35 bridge lengthening between Old U.S. 56 and 151st

UPDATE (Nov. 19):This project is closed for the winter season. Work has been completed on the northbound bridge. Work to lengthen the southbound bridge will resume in the spring from approximately March to June of 2020. Exact dates and details to be announced at a later date.

Original announcement: beginning Friday, June 7, 2019, work will begin on I-35 to lengthen the bridges over the BNSF railroad (between Old US-56 and 151st Street). Northbound will be reduced to one lane and southbound will be reduced to two lanes through the duration of the project from Lone Elm Rd to old US-56 Hwy. The project is estimated to be completed by mid-November.

Lewis and Clark Viaduct

UPDATE (Sep. 2019): Due to severe weather in 2019, these closures will continue into 2020. A new completion estimate will be made pending pier construction progress which is subject to high water conditions.

Original announcement: Westbound I-70 will be closed past Broadway Blvd (in Missouri NW corner of the downtown loop) to 3rd St in Kansas City, Kansas for bridge replacement. Ramps from 5th St, Beardsley Rd, Independence Ave at Delaware Ave and I-35 to Westbound I-70 (in Missouri) will be closed. Ramps from Westbound I-70 to Minnesota Ave, Washington Blvd, and Fairfax Trafficway will also be closed.
