A converter dolly may not be towed behind a power unit . All attachments following the trailer (dollies, etc.) shall be separated and transported on separate vehicles if the dollies, etc if doing so creates an overweight condition. If additional vehicles are needed then the mover obtains them at thier own expense.
What is the legal length of a trailer in Kansas?
The legal length of a single trailer is 59 1/2 feet
What is the legal length of each trailer when pulled in a tandem configuration?
The combination shall consist of a truck-tractor-semitrailer-trailer. Each trailer being towed shall not exceed 28 1/2 feet in length.
What types of vehicle combinations are allowed to operate in Kansas?
The following type of vehicle combinations are allowed to operate in Kansas:
  1. Truck-tractor - Single trailer combination (single) - This may be used to transport loads anywhere in Kansas without a permit.
  2. Truck-tractor-semi-trailer-combination (double) - This may be used to transport loads anywhere in Kansas without a permit.
  3. Truck-tractor-semi-trailer-trailer-trailer combination(triple) - This combination may only transport loads only on I70 between Goodland, Kansas and the Colorado border (SVC program). This combination may also transport loads on the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) provided an Access permit is obtained from the KTC before entering Kansas. These two locations are the only places where triple combinations are allowed to be driven.

Containers are allowed to be transported in Kansas. However, they are considered divisible loads. As such, they are subject to inspection at any time. The GVW of the combination cannot exceed 80,000 pounds on the Interstate or 85,000 pounds on US/K routes and all axle loads shall be legal in weight.
May the driver towing an overwidth empty trailer obtain a permit for the width of the trailer.

Yes and No

A overwidth permit may be issued to the driver towing an empty overwidth trailer if the intent is to drive the empty combination directly to a loading location in Kansas to pick up an overwidth load provided the load is equal to or exceeds the width of the trailer the load to is transported to a location outside of Kansas.

An overwidth permit may be issued to the driver towing an empty overwidth trailer if the intent of the move is to immediately return to a destination outside of Kansas after dropping off an overwidth load provided the width of the load being carried is equal to or exceeds the width of the trailer.

If the transporter us moving this combination through Kansas then a permit may not be obtained and the combination shall be broken down until it complies with legal standards.

Movers shall remember: Permits are issued to accommodate the size and weight of loads not the vehicles used to transport the loads.
