KDOT announces Local Partnership Program projects

KDOT announces Local Partnership Program projects

State and local funds totaling $18.2 million were approved recently for 21 construction projects in cities across Kansas through the Kansas Department of Transportation's Local Partnership Program.

“The Local Partnership Program has been very popular in the state and these improvements couldn’t have happened without local partners and KDOT working together,” said KDOT Secretary Deb Miller. “Over the past five years, 239 projects totaling nearly $128 million have been initiated through this program with KDOT funding approximately $83 million in improvements and local governments $45 million.”

The program financially assists local governments in making needed road improvements on city and county roads. Projects were awarded under the categories of Geometric Improvements and Economic Development.

Geometric improvement projects are designed to help cities widen pavements, add or widen shoulders, eliminate steep hills or sharp curves and add needed acceleration and deceleration lanes. Economic development projects are intended to enhance economic development in the state.

Most cities with City Connecting Links of the State Highway System within their boundaries are eligible to apply for Geometric Improvement funds. Any local unit of government or state agency may be considered for Economic Development funds for a highway or bridge construction project that has the potential to enhance and increase the area's income, employment and land values.

Enactment of the Comprehensive Transportation Program by the 1999 Legislature allowed continuation of the three local partnership programs, which have been in existence since 1986. As part of the CTP, funding for the local partnership projects increased.

Following is a list of approved cities, highways and Local Partnership Program projects.

Geometric Improvement  - 16 projects

Garden City - U.S. 83, widen to four lanes from the Arkansas River north to just north of Finnup Drive and the realignment of Finnup Drive north of its existing location; Liberal - U.S. 54/U.S. 83,  intersection reconstruction; Dighton - K-96, reconstruction between Fourth and Seventh Streets; Lyons – Intersection of Main Street and Grand Avenue in Lyons, reconstruction and traffic signals; El Dorado – K-254, 200 feet west of High Street to Topeka Street on Central Avenue, widen for left turn lane; Pittsburg – K-126, intersection of Fourth Street and Rouse Avenue, add left turn and upgrade traffic signals; Pomona – K-68 from East B Street to East D Street on Franklin Street, reconstruction; New Strawn – U.S. 75, Neosho Street to Arrowhead Drive on Main Street, construct additional northbound and southbound lanes; Erie – K-108, from Mildfelt west to U.S. 59, widen and reconstruction; Oberlin – U.S. 36, from Neill Avenue east to Penn Avenue, reconstruction; Manhattan – Intersections of Seth Childs Road and Southwind Road and Seth Childs Road and Amherst Road, add turning lanes; Holton – K-16/K-116 from U.S. 75 east to ˝ block east of Topeka Avenue, reconstruction; Emporia – Intersection of Graphic Arts Road and U.S. 50, construct southbound turning loane of Graphic Arts Road; Mankato – Lincoln Street to Lebow Street on South Street, construct inlets and curb and gutter; McPherson – ˝ block west of Cherry Street to Grand Avenue on Kansas Avenue, reconstruction; Washington – Intersection of 7th Street and South B Street, widen roadway on U.S. 36 and improve all radii.

Economic Development – 5 projects

Downs - U.S. 24, south and east to Third Street and Commercial Street, construct roadway on existing and new alignment; Lawrence - K-10 from Iowa Street to Louisiana Street on 23rd Street, remove, relocate and/or consolidate access points; Pratt – 30th Street from U.S. 281 east to K-61, reconstruction; Topeka – Southwest MacVicar from I-70 eastbound exit ramp to Outer Circle Drive, reconstruction; Manhattan – Intersection of K-18 and Wildcat Creek Road, add acceleration and deceleration lanes.
