2009

Location
U-50, Finney County, Southwest KS
The US-50 corridor from the Kearny-Finney county line, east to the north junction of US-83.

Work Type
Grade, Bridge & Surfacing

Scope of Work
The project consists of two parts: 1) Determine a location and design concept for making US-50 a four-lane, access-controlled highway from the Kearny/Finney County line eastward to just east of the west junction with US-83. 2) Based on the location and design concept, design and build four lanes with controlled access from about one mile west of Holcomb eastward to and including the US-83 junction.

Project Description
This is a System Enhancement Project for studying and building improvements to US-50 west of Garden City. Finney County and the City of Garden City applied for the project and are its local sponsors.

Project Purpose
The purpose of the improvements is to increase the capacity of US-50 while providing safe and efficient travel and safe access to the highway at appropriate locations. The improvements should address current needs while providing for projected increases in traffic volume on the highway.

Project Need
The sponsors applied for the project to provide highway improvements that would serve their growing population and current as well as future highway needs. In the period from 1990 to 2000, the population of Finney County grew more than 22 percent. According to the project sponsors, the improvements are critical to sustaining growth in Finney County and are needed to meet the needs of increasing traffic and to address critical safety issues of citizens traveling to and from Finney County, as well as local traffic. The sponsors wanted the improvements to have separation of traffic flows, ease of traffic movement, additional safety considerations, and the capacity to serve the commercial traffic now using the route. The ability to pass, be passed, or safely enter and exit the highway is paramount, they said.
