Right of Way Research

All KDOT land records are archived and maintained by the Engineering Section of the Bureau of Right of Way. These records include, but are not limited to, highway improvement project plan files; right of way strip maps; tract files that include copies of the instrument of conveyance (deeds, district court proceedings, etc.); coordinate geometry point lists; etc.

Nearly all of the above noted archived records are available to the public upon request. In fact, the Bureau of Right of Way's Engineering Section processes research requests on a daily basis.

To submit records requests to the Bureau of Right of Way, which acquires property for highway projects and oversees highway right-of-way owned by KDOT, please submit the Right of Way online records request form.

The requestor should have the following location information to aid in facilitating the research:

  • County
  • Highway (route Number)
  • Section, Township, and Range

Also, the requestor should specify the types of records that they desire. (e.g. plans and deeds; plans only; deed only) Fees associated with providing this information and research are set forth in the Kansas Department of Transportation's Standard Operating Manual. Time and labor apply for all requests, materials charges may also apply to requests sent via regular mail.  They are as follows:

  • Time and Labor: $40.00 per hour
  • Additional charges may apply. (e.g. regular mail)
