Johnson County

K-10/Lexington Ave.

Interchange improvement project; work will address capacity improvements to the K-10 entrance and exit ramps at Lexington Ave. and will add a lane to each of the EB and WB ramps. An additional left turning lane will be added to each K-10 entrance ramp from Lexington Ave. and traffic signals will be installed at the EB K-10 entrance and exit ramps. NB and SB Lexington Ave. will have a single lane closed in each direction, from 91st St. to 95th St., which will remain closed until mid-December. Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays, as needed, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

EB and WB I-435, Metcalf Ave. to State Line Road

Pavement improvement project; work includes concrete pavement patching, concrete surface grinding and pavement marking. EB and WB I-435 lanes will have single and double lane closures and intermittent ramp closures in the work zone. Work will take place nightly, Tuesday through Sunday, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Project completion expected by late November.

EB and WB K-10, (multiple bridges) Evening Star Rd. to K-7

Bridge improvement projects; improvements on Lexington Ave. bridge include bridge deck replacement, repainting bridge girders and upgraded drainage; work on other bridges includes deck patching and overlay. Work locations include the following WB K-10 bridges: Evening Star Rd., Sunflower Rd., Lexington Ave., Kill Creek, Camp Creek and Cedar Creek; and the following EB K-10 bridges: Cedar Creek Rd. and Cedar Creek Pkwy. UPDATE: Nov. 29, 2022 -

Pavement work on the WB K-10 bridge over Kill Creek has been completed. Bridge deck replacement project on the WB K-10 bridge over Lexington Ave. has been completed  (bridge painting is scheduled for Spring 2023). WB K-10/Lexington Ave. entrance and exit ramps remain closed. All K-10 lanes are reopened to traffic.

Deck patching and overlay work has been completed on the following WB K-10 bridges: Evening Star Rd., Sunflower Rd., Camp Creek and Cedar Creek; and the following EB K-10 bridges: Cedar Creek Rd. and Cedar Creek Pkwy.




Wyandotte County --

K-32/Turner Diagonal Fwy./Kaw Dr.

Bridge replacement project; work includes replacement of the EB and WB K-32/Turner Diagonal Fwy. bridges over Kaw Dr. and the Union Pacific Railroad lines. Lane and shoulder closures are scheduled on EB and WB K-32/Turner Diagonal Fwy. from approximately 65th St. to 59th Ln.; single lane will be open at all times. Crossovers will be built to carry traffic head-to-head through the work zone. Work is scheduled in multiple phases with traffic control placed first to prepare for bridge replacements. Bridge work will begin in March 2023. EB Kaw Dr. will be closed during bridge demolitions in 2023 and 2024.Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Project will shut down in November for the winter and resume in March 2023 and again from November 2023 to March 2024. Project completion is expected by December 2024.

EB and WB K-32, Kaw Dr. to 55th St.

Pavement improvement project; work includes concrete pavement patching, pavement smoothness grinding, pavement joint sealing and pavement marking. EB and WB K-32 traffic will be reduced to a single lane for the duration of the project. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and Saturday, as needed. Project completion expected by mid-December.

I-70 and I-635 interchange

Bridge deck reconstruction project. WB I-70 to SB I-635 exit ramp will be closed for duration of project; detours will be marked. Work will occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays as necessary, with occasional overnight work from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Project completion expected by late December.

EB and WB I-70/78th St. to Lewis and Clark viaduct bridge

Pavement improvement project; double lane closures on I-70 and ramps closed as needed in project area. Work will occur overnight, weather permitting. Completion expected in early November 2022. 

NB and SB I-635/K-5 interchange

Construction on this bridge replacement project has resumed; completion is expected in December 2022. NB and SB I-635 and NB K-5 traffic will have daily lane closures. The SB I-635 to SB K-5 ramp and NB K-5 to SB I-635 ramp will be closed for the duration of the project.

NB K-5 will be closed to traffic and a crossover will carry one lane of traffic from NB I-635 onto SB I-635. One lane of traffic will remain open on NB I-635.

Detours are marked as follows:

SB I-635: Traffic will be routed south of the K-5 interchange to Leavenworth Road, then back north on NB I-635 to the SB K-5 exit.

NB K-5: Traffic will be routed to U.S. 69 (7th Street), south to I-70 and west back to northbound I-635.  There, the signed detour will end.  Traffic will use existing traffic signing to get back to NB K-5 (Leavenworth Road) exit. Traffic will be controlled using digital message boards, road signs, concrete safety barriers and traffic cones



Leavenworth County --

Multi-County --

NB and SB U.S. 73 (K-7)/Parallel Pkwy.

Intersection improvement project; work includes resurfacing for the installation of a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) at the intersection of U.S. 73 (K-7) and Parallel Pkwy. Traffic will be managed in four phases and crossovers will be built to carry U.S. 73 (K-7) traffic head-to-head through the work zone. Phase 1 (September – November 2022): lane and shoulder closures during work hours; single lane to be opened at all times; Phase 2 (March – July 2023): single lane traffic will cross over to travel head-to-head on existing SB lanes; Phase 3 (July – December 2023): single lane traffic will cross over to travel head-to-head on newly constructed NB lanes; and Phase 4 (December 2023): lane and shoulder closures during work hours; single lane to be opened at all times. Work will take place Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Project will shut down in November for the winter and resume in March 2023. Project completion is expected by December 2023.

Roadway lighting project: Multiple locations in Johnson and Wyandotte counties; I-35 south of I-635, I-35 (exit 210) KDOT weigh station, I-35 from Roe Ave. to Southwest Blvd., I-35/U.S. 69 (18th St. Expy.) interchange, U.S. 69 at College Blvd., I-435 at West 95th St., I-70 at 57th St. and K-7 at K-32.

U.S. 73 (K-7)/Hollingsworth Rd., WYCO & LVCO

Intersection improvement project, adding SB turn lanes to EB and WB Hollingsworth. Light towers will be installed in November 2022.

Renner Road at I-435

Bridge deck reconstruction project; improvements include bridge deck replacement, repainting bridge girders and enhancement of bridge lighting.

SB U.S. 69 at 179th St.

Bridge deck repair project; work includes replacing damaged concrete and placing a concrete overlay.

NB and SB I-435/Wolcott Dr. to Holliday Dr.

Bridge deck pothole patching.

EB and WB U.S. 24 (U.S. 40), K-16 to K-32

Pavement improvement project; asphalt overlay, centerline rumble strip and pavement marking.

NB and SB I-35, 215th St. to 167th St.

Pavement marking project; new pavement markings will be applied to NB and SB I-35 lanes, as well as entrance and exit ramps at Sunflower Rd., Homestead Ln. and Gardner Rd.

NB I-35, 167th St. to 151st St.

Pavement improvement project; work includes pavement patching and asphalt overlay.

SB I-435 at Johnson Drive

Bridge pavement patching and pavement widening, Gardner Rd. bridge at I-35

Bridge deck repair at 67th St/Shawnee Mission Pkwy over K-7 in JOCO

Bridge deck repair project at 67th Street/Shawnee Mission Parkway over K-7 in Shawnee is complete. SB K-7 to EB 67th and NB K-7 to WB 67th St. ramps are fully open.

U.S. 56 pavement repair project, Moonlight Road to I-35

Work will include concrete pavement patching and asphalt overlay. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane during hours of work. The off ramp from southbound New Century Parkway to westbound U.S. 56 will also be closed: traffic will be able to access U.S. 56 using Industrial Bypass. All lanes of traffic will be open when work is not being performed. Work will occur 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Wednesday to Friday, and 7 p.m. Saturday to 6:00 a.m. Monday. On Sunday, May 8th, work will conclude at noon. Project is expected to be completed by mid-July.

Bridge maintenance project on U.S. 169/Seventh Street.

A bridge maintenance project on U.S. 169/Seventh Street in Kansas City, Kan., began in late Oct. 2020. Work will include truss and expansion joint repair on the Kansas River bridge, primarily on the northbound side. Bridge is now open.

I-70 Truck Staging Area at Turner Diagonal

EB & WB I-70 truck staging areas are open.

Lewis & Clark Viaduct

WB I-70 bridge replacement project is completed.

Widening I-35 from 3 lanes to 4 lanes at 75th St.

A lane widening project on I-35 from south of 67th Street to south of 75th Street is ongoing, weather permitting. Majority of the work will occur during daylight, however, night work is expected during particular phases of construction. The project was completed in late December.

Overlay and bridge work on I-635 completed in December

EB & WB U.S. 56 and 199th Street intersection and safety improvements. Intersection improvements added right and left turn lanes for eastbound U.S. 56 and a left turn lane for westbound U.S. 56.  Safety improvements include creating 10-foot shoulders and shallower embankment slopes. Finished Dec. 2020.

Mill and asphalt overlay on I-435 in Wyandotte County

A mill and asphalt overlay project on northbound and southbound I-435 in Wyandotte County, completed in November.

Bridge maintenance project on Centennial Bridge - Leavenworth County

Centennial bridge maintenance project included cleaning and painting of the interior tie girders completed in Nov.

Resurfacing on I-435 in Johnson County

A resurfacing project on I-435 in Johnson County completed in Oct.

Mill and overlay on K-10 in Johnson County

An asphalt mill and overlay project on K-10 in Johnson County completed mid-Sept. 

Patch and overlay on I-435 in Johnson County

A mill and overlay project on northbound and southbound I-435 from K-10 to Midland Drive is complete.

Johnson County - K-7 mill and overlay project

K-7 mill and overlay project is complete. 

Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties - US 73 mill and overlay project

U.S. 73 mill and overlay project is complete. Superior Bowen of Kansas City, Mo. is the contractor on the $3.6 million project.

Southbound I-35 bridge lengthening at 151st Street, Olathe

Phase Two of a project to lengthen the I-35 southbound bridge north of 151st Street in Olathe is ongoing, weather permitting. The project still has some work going on under the bridge, but traffic is getting through.  Last year, Phase One of this project lengthened the I-35 northbound bridge.

Traffic will be instructed to use East Old U.S. 56 and controlled with barriers, traffic cones, signage, arrow boards and digital message boards. Alternative routes are suggested.

Johnson County - Mill and overlay on U.S. 56/Shawnee Mission Parkway

A mill and overlay project on U.S. 56/Shawnee Mission Parkway in Johnson County.

COMPLETED: U.S. 69 over Merriam Lane/Turkey Creek

Bridge repairs on U.S. 69 over Merriam Lane and Turkey Creek in Wyandotte County, including replacing approach pavement, replacing expansion joints and repairing and replacing bearings. Project started July 15 and was completed in December 2020.

COMPLETED: Sunflower Road over I-35

Bridge replacement of Sunflower Rd over I-35 and improvements to ramps. The project began in April and was completed in December.

COMPLETED: K-7 over K-10 bridge repairs

Bridge repairs on both the northbound and southbound bridges of K-7 over K-10. The project began in August and was completed in December.

COMPLETED: U.S. 69 bridge over I-35

Bridge repairs on U.S. 69 over I-35 in Lenexa. The project replaced the bridge deck, rehabilitated the bridge and reconstructed pavement on U.S. 69 from the southbound I-35 to southbound U.S. 69 exit through the southern approach slab of the bridge. The project began in August and was completed in November.

COMPLETED: I-635 and I-70

The I-635 bridge over Speaker Road (just north of K-32) will have traffic in both directions reduced to two lanes utilizing the shoulder for repair. This will also require the closures of the ramps from eastbound and westbound I-70 to southbound I-635, and the ramps from eastbound and westbound K-32 to northbound I-635 for the duration of the project. The detours for these closures will be via I-70 to the north and I-35 to the south then to 18th St/US 69 to K-32. This closure will be in effect through November, 2019.

I-70 eastbound will have pavement patching and smoothness grinding take place from the Rock Quarry Rd. to just east of 38th St., requiring the roadway to be reduced to one lane nightly beginning July 22nd. This closure is in effect through November, 2019.

COMPLETED: I-35 from 95th to 135th (night work)

Concrete patching, milling and asphalt overlay repair project on I-35 will begin on Monday, May 6, weather permitting, from 95th Street south to 135th Street.

Lane reductions will take place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. throughout the project area. Some Sunday work may be necessary. Ramps will be closed intermittently for milling and overlay during the repair work, and there will be no signed detours. Motorists are urged to allow extra time to their travel schedule or use an alternate route. The work is scheduled to be completed by late October.


COMPLETED: Centennial bridge (K-92)

Repairs to the Centennial Bridge (Leavenworth County) on K-92 over the Missouri River began on July 22. Traffic was reduced to one lane, utilizing temporary traffic controls. The project was completed on September 6.


COMPLETED: U.S. 69 bridge over 151st

Southbound US-69 will be reduced to one lane in the vicinity of 151st Street for bridge repairs. The project is expected to be completed by mid-August.

COMPLETED: K-10 mill and overlay

Asphalt mill and overlay eastbound and westbound K-10 from Douglas County to K-7. Daily lane and ramp closures throughout the duration of the project which is expected to be completed by mid-September.


COMPLETED: U.S. 69 patching, mill, and overlay from 103rd to Blue Valley Split

Beginning 6/27/19 northbound and southbound US-69 will be reduced to one lane nightly from 7:30 pm-5:30 am from 103rd Street to the Blue Valley split for pavement patching followed by a mill and overlay. Exit and entrance ramps will be closed intermittently during those same times. The project is expected to be completed by late July.

COMPLETED: I-435 Pavement repairs

Northbound I-435 two left lanes closed from 87th Street to Midland Dr. for pavement repairs. Estimated completion date: August 9.

COMPLETED: K-10 bridge over Woodland

Bridge repair on WB K-10 bridge over Woodland Road. The westbound entrance ramps from Renner Blvd to K-10 and Ridgeview Rd to K-10 will be closed and will remain closed through the duration of the project. Westbound K-10 will be reduced to one lane of traffic from Ridgeview Rd to Woodland Rd through the duration of the project. Traffic wanting to access westbound K-10 from Renner or Ridgeview should use College Blvd or Prairie Star Pkwy. The project is expected to be completed by late July.
