Johnson County --

Construction work on K-10 over Kill Creek

Work has begun to replace the eastbound K-10 bridge deck over Kill Creek in Johnson County, includes bridge deck and approach slab replacement, bearing resetting and girder painting.

Construction has started on the westbound K-10 roadway to carry single lane traffic head-to-head during the project. Once this is complete, eastbound K-10 traffic will be shifted to travel on the westbound K-10 roadway and construction on the eastbound K-10 over Kill Creek bridge will begin.

Project work will require one lane of the Lexington Avenue to eastbound K-10 entrance ramp to be closed for the duration of the project. Daily lane closures will be scheduled in the project work zone. Work will take place Monday through Friday and Saturday, as needed. Traffic will be controlled using lane closures, portable message signs, arrow boards, signage and traffic cones.

Clarkson Construction Company, of Kansas City, Mo., is the contractor for the $3.8 million project, which is expected to be completed in November.

NB and SB I-35, Lamar Ave. to MO state line

Pavement improvement project; work includes milling and overlay, concrete pavement patching and pavement marking. NB and SB I-35 lanes will have single and double lane closures and intermittent ramp closures in the work zone.

Nightly lane closures are scheduled on NB & SB I-35, between Lamar Avenue and the Kansas-Missouri state line, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., where work is taking place.

The following I-35 entrance and exit ramps will be closed as needed: Lamar Avenue, Roe Boulevard, Southwest Boulevard, Mission Road, 7th Street Trafficway and Cambridge Drive.

Superior Bowen, of Kansas City, Mo., is the contractor for the $10.8 million project, which is expected to be completed in Sept.

I-435 Pavement Improvement Project

The project began in July 2022 and includes concrete pavement patching, concrete surface grinding and pavement marking on all lanes and ramps.

In areas where work is taking place, eastbound and westbound I-435 lanes will be closed nightly, and the following I-435 entrance and exit ramps will be closed as needed: Metcalf Avenue, Nall Avenue, Roe Avenue and State Line Road.

Work will take place nightly as follows: 

Sunday through Thursday, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.;

Friday, from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.;

Saturday, from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m.

All lanes will be open to traffic from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from  9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

During work hours, a minimum of two through lanes will be open to traffic and no more than two consecutive ramps will be closed at the same time. Traffic will be controlled using portable message signs, arrow boards, signage and traffic cones. Message boards alerting motorists are in place, notifying the start of the project.

Clarkson Construction Company, of Kansas City, Mo., is the contractor for the $5.1 million project, which is scheduled to be completed in Sept.

U.S. 69 Express

Safety and congestion improvements will include building a new express toll lane on northbound and southbound U.S. 69, from 103rd Street to 151st Street, adjacent to existing general purpose lanes, and improvements at the U.S. 69/167th Street interchange.

Pre-construction work, including utility relocation, began in mid-January. Construction will begin in the spring, and the project’s express lanes are scheduled to open at the end of 2025 with remaining construction wrapping up in 2026. For more info, 69express.org.




Wyandotte County --

I-635 & Shawnee Drive bridge deck replacement project

Bridge deck replacement project at Shawnee Drive over I-635 begins 3/15, weather permitting. On 3/17, the Shawnee Drive bridge will fully close to traffic and remain closed until September.

Detours for Shawnee Drive will be marked directing traffic toward Merriam Lane and Metropolitan Avenue. I-635 entrance and exit ramps at Merriam Lane and Metropolitan Avenue will be used as turnarounds for Shawnee Drive motorists wanting to travel to the opposite side of the Shawnee Drive bridge.

For the duration of the project, all adjacent I-635 ramps will remain open to traffic. Short-term overnight lane closures will be scheduled, as necessary, on northbound and southbound I-635.

Traffic control signs, devices and message boards will be used to direct traffic through the project work zone and project detours. Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturdays, as necessary.

Miles Excavating, of Basehor, is the contractor for the $2.7 million project. The Shawnee Drive bridge is scheduled to reopen to traffic in September and the project is expected to be completed in November. 

K-32/Turner Diagonal Fwy./Kaw Dr.

Project resumes March 13, 2023, crossover construction will continue and bridge replacement work will begin. Impacts to traffic are as follows (Phase 1 of the project has been completed)

Phase 2 (March – November 2023): various ramp closures; single lane K-32/Turner Diagonal Freeway traffic will cross over to travel head-to-head; eastbound Kaw Drive closure during bridge demolition;

Phase 3 (March – December 2024): various ramp closures; single lane K-32/Turner Diagonal Freeway traffic will cross over to travel head-to-head; eastbound Kaw Drive closure during bridge demolition.

Beginning March 14, eastbound and westbound K-32 traffic will be reduced to one lane, from 55th Street to 65th Street, and the following week, the ramps listed below will close:

  • Eastbound K-32 to continue on eastbound K-32
  • Southbound Turner Diagonal Freeway to eastbound Kaw Drive
  • Westbound K-32 to continue on westbound K-32
  • Westbound Kaw Drive to eastbound K-32

Work will occur daily, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Message boards are in place alerting motorists to closures and directing traffic toward advised detours. 

Detours will be marked and include the following:

  • Eastbound K-32 ramp to continue on eastbound K-32 (purple on map): Traffic will be directed east on Kaw Drive to 57th Street and travel north to eastbound I-70, then take exit to enter southbound I-635.
  • Southbound Turner Diagonal Freeway to Eastbound Kaw Drive ramp (blue on map): Traffic will be directed east on K-32 and take exit to enter northbound I-635, take exit to enter westbound I-70, then exit at 57th Street and travel south to eastbound Kaw Drive.
  • Westbound K-32 ramp to continue on westbound K-32 (orange on map): Traffic will be directed via northbound I-635 to take exit and enter westbound I-70, then exit at 57th Street and travel south to Kaw Drive and then enter westbound K-32.
  • Westbound Kaw Drive to eastbound K-32 ramp (green on map): Traffic will be directed west to travel northbound on 57th Street and enter eastbound I-70, then enter southbound I-635 and take exit for eastbound K-32.

Traffic will be controlled using lane closures, barricades, message boards, signage and traffic cones. Miles Excavating, of Basehor, is the contractor for the $22.7 million project, which is scheduled to be completed in December 2024.


EB and WB I-70/78th St. to Lewis and Clark viaduct bridge

Pavement improvement project; double lane closures on I-70 and ramps closed as needed in project area. Work will occur overnight, weather permitting. Completion expected in May.


Leavenworth County --

Intersection improvement project at K-16/Parallel Road

This project includes improvements to sight distances at the intersection and the addition of shoulders to the roadway.

For the duration of the project, K-16 will be fully closed from 500 feet south of Parallel Road to 1,300 feet north of Parallel Road. Parallel Road will also be closed from approximately 450 feet west of K-16 to approximately 200 feet east of K-16.

Detours will be marked as follows: South of Parallel Road, K-16 traffic will be detoured to use U.S. 40 (U.S. 24) then to U.S. 59 and back to K-16 (K-92);

North of Parallel Road, K-16 traffic will be detoured to use K-16 (K-92) then to U.S. 59 to U.S. 40 (U.S. 24) and back to K-16 (K-92).

In the area of the project work zone:

  1. Through K-16 traffic will continue to follow the marked detours;
  2. Access to Helen’s Hilltop will be on northbound K-16 from the south;
  3. Access to K-16 Storage will be on southbound K-16 from the north;
  4. Access to Leavenworth State Fishing Lake will be via K-92/K-16 to 251st Street.

Work will take place Monday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. King’s Construction, of Oskaloosa, is the contractor for the $1.3 million project, which is expected to be completed in mid-October.

U.S. 24 (U.S. 40)/K-16 (East 4th St.) junction and U.S. 24 (U.S. 40)/N. Star Dr.

Sidewalk improvement project; improvements include installation of new sidewalks, sidewalk ramps and pedestrian signals. U.S. 24 (U.S. 40) traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction at K-16 (4th St.). Work will occur Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with work on Saturday as needed. Project completion expected by late July. 

LVCO project; Fairmount Rd. over Little Stranger Creek

Bridge improvement project; improvements include grading elevation modifications and asphalt pavement reconstruction. For the duration of the project, Fairmount Rd. will be fully closed to traffic, from Tonganoxie Rd. to 171st St. Work will occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with work on Saturday as needed. Project completion expected by early November.

Multi-County --

NB and SB U.S. 73 (K-7)/Parallel Pkwy.

Intersection improvement project; work has resumed and includes resurfacing for the installation of a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) at the intersection of U.S. 73 (K-7) and Parallel Pkwy. Traffic will be managed in four phases and crossovers will be built to carry U.S. 73 (K-7) traffic head-to-head through the work zone. Phase 1 (September – November 2022): lane and shoulder closures during work hours; single lane to be opened at all times; Phase 2 (March – July 2023): single lane traffic will cross over to travel head-to-head on existing SB lanes; Phase 3 (July – December 2023): single lane traffic will cross over to travel head-to-head on newly constructed NB lanes; and Phase 4 (December 2023): lane and shoulder closures during work hours; single lane to be opened at all times. Work will take place Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Project completion is expected by December 2023.

K-5 pavement improvement project

The project includes milling and overlay on all lanes of K-5, on an approximately 10.1-mile roadway section from I-435 to U.S. 73. For the duration of the project, while work is taking place, flaggers and a pilot car operation will carry single lane traffic through the work zone. Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes in the project area. Work is scheduled Monday through Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Superior Bowen, of Kansas City, Mo., is the contractor for the $2.7 million project, which is expected to be completed in mid-September.

NB and SB I-435, NB and SB I-635 guardrail replacement

Guardrail replacement projects; work included guardrail replacement on NB and SB I-435, from 95th St. to Midland Dr., and on NB and SB I-635, near I-35, in Johnson Co., and on NB and SB I-635 at Parallel Pkwy. in Wyandotte Co.

K-10/Lexington Ave.

Interchange improvement project to address capacity improvements to the K-10 entrance and exit ramps at Lexington Ave. and added a lane to each of the EB and WB ramps. An additional left turning lane added to each K-10 entrance ramp from Lexington Ave. and traffic signals installed at the EB K-10 entrance and exit ramps.

EB and WB K-10, (multiple bridges) Evening Star Rd. to K-7

Bridge improvement projects; improvements on Lexington Ave. bridge include bridge deck replacement, repainting bridge girders and upgraded drainage; work on other bridges includes deck patching and overlay. Bridge deck repair project at 67th Street/Shawnee Mission Parkway over K-7 in Shawnee is complete. SB K-7 to EB 67th and NB K-7 to WB 67th St. ramps are fully open.

U.S. 56 pavement repair project, Moonlight Road to I-35

Work will include concrete pavement patching and asphalt overlay. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane during hours of work. The off ramp from southbound New Century Parkway to westbound U.S. 56 will also be closed: traffic will be able to access U.S. 56 using Industrial Bypass. All lanes of traffic will be open when work is not being performed. Work will occur 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Wednesday to Friday, and 7 p.m. Saturday to 6:00 a.m. Monday. On Sunday, May 8th, work will conclude at noon. Project is expected to be completed by mid-July.

Bridge maintenance project on U.S. 169/Seventh Street.

A bridge maintenance project on U.S. 169/Seventh Street in Kansas City, Kan., began in late Oct. 2020. Work will include truss and expansion joint repair on the Kansas River bridge, primarily on the northbound side. Bridge is now open.

I-70 Truck Staging Area at Turner Diagonal

EB & WB I-70 truck staging areas are open.

Lewis & Clark Viaduct

WB I-70 bridge replacement project is completed.

Widening I-35 from 3 lanes to 4 lanes at 75th St.

A lane widening project on I-35 from south of 67th Street to south of 75th Street is ongoing, weather permitting. Majority of the work will occur during daylight, however, night work is expected during particular phases of construction. The project was completed in late December.

Overlay and bridge work on I-635 completed in December

EB & WB U.S. 56 and 199th Street intersection and safety improvements. Intersection improvements added right and left turn lanes for eastbound U.S. 56 and a left turn lane for westbound U.S. 56.  Safety improvements include creating 10-foot shoulders and shallower embankment slopes. Finished Dec. 2020.

A mill and asphalt overlay project on northbound and southbound I-435 in Wyandotte County, completed in November.

U.S. 73 mill and overlay project is complete. Superior Bowen of Kansas City, Mo. is the contractor on the $3.6 million project.

Southbound I-35 bridge lengthening at 151st Street, Olathe

Phase Two of a project to lengthen the I-35 southbound bridge north of 151st Street in Olathe is ongoing, weather permitting. The project still has some work going on under the bridge, but traffic is getting through.  Last year, Phase One of this project lengthened the I-35 northbound bridge.

Traffic will be instructed to use East Old U.S. 56 and controlled with barriers, traffic cones, signage, arrow boards and digital message boards. Alternative routes are suggested.

Johnson County - Mill and overlay on U.S. 56/Shawnee Mission Parkway

A mill and overlay project on U.S. 56/Shawnee Mission Parkway in Johnson County.

COMPLETED: U.S. 69 over Merriam Lane/Turkey Creek

Bridge repairs on U.S. 69 over Merriam Lane and Turkey Creek in Wyandotte County, including replacing approach pavement, replacing expansion joints and repairing and replacing bearings. Project started July 15 and was completed in December 2020.

COMPLETED: Sunflower Road over I-35

Bridge replacement of Sunflower Rd over I-35 and improvements to ramps. The project began in April and was completed in December.

COMPLETED: K-7 over K-10 bridge repairs

Bridge repairs on both the northbound and southbound bridges of K-7 over K-10. The project began in August and was completed in December.

COMPLETED: U.S. 69 bridge over I-35

Bridge repairs on U.S. 69 over I-35 in Lenexa. The project replaced the bridge deck, rehabilitated the bridge and reconstructed pavement on U.S. 69 from the southbound I-35 to southbound U.S. 69 exit through the southern approach slab of the bridge. The project began in August and was completed in November.

COMPLETED: I-635 and I-70

The I-635 bridge over Speaker Road (just north of K-32) will have traffic in both directions reduced to two lanes utilizing the shoulder for repair. This will also require the closures of the ramps from eastbound and westbound I-70 to southbound I-635, and the ramps from eastbound and westbound K-32 to northbound I-635 for the duration of the project. The detours for these closures will be via I-70 to the north and I-35 to the south then to 18th St/US 69 to K-32. This closure will be in effect through November, 2019.

I-70 eastbound will have pavement patching and smoothness grinding take place from the Rock Quarry Rd. to just east of 38th St., requiring the roadway to be reduced to one lane nightly beginning July 22nd. This closure is in effect through November, 2019.

COMPLETED: I-35 from 95th to 135th (night work)

Concrete patching, milling and asphalt overlay repair project on I-35 will begin on Monday, May 6, weather permitting, from 95th Street south to 135th Street.

Lane reductions will take place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. throughout the project area. Some Sunday work may be necessary. Ramps will be closed intermittently for milling and overlay during the repair work, and there will be no signed detours. Motorists are urged to allow extra time to their travel schedule or use an alternate route. The work is scheduled to be completed by late October.


COMPLETED: Centennial bridge (K-92)

Repairs to the Centennial Bridge (Leavenworth County) on K-92 over the Missouri River began on July 22. Traffic was reduced to one lane, utilizing temporary traffic controls. The project was completed on September 6.


COMPLETED: U.S. 69 bridge over 151st

Southbound US-69 will be reduced to one lane in the vicinity of 151st Street for bridge repairs. The project is expected to be completed by mid-August.

COMPLETED: K-10 mill and overlay

Asphalt mill and overlay eastbound and westbound K-10 from Douglas County to K-7. Daily lane and ramp closures throughout the duration of the project which is expected to be completed by mid-September.


COMPLETED: U.S. 69 patching, mill, and overlay from 103rd to Blue Valley Split

Beginning 6/27/19 northbound and southbound US-69 will be reduced to one lane nightly from 7:30 pm-5:30 am from 103rd Street to the Blue Valley split for pavement patching followed by a mill and overlay. Exit and entrance ramps will be closed intermittently during those same times. The project is expected to be completed by late July.

COMPLETED: I-435 Pavement repairs

Northbound I-435 two left lanes closed from 87th Street to Midland Dr. for pavement repairs. Estimated completion date: August 9.

COMPLETED: K-10 bridge over Woodland

Bridge repair on WB K-10 bridge over Woodland Road. The westbound entrance ramps from Renner Blvd to K-10 and Ridgeview Rd to K-10 will be closed and will remain closed through the duration of the project. Westbound K-10 will be reduced to one lane of traffic from Ridgeview Rd to Woodland Rd through the duration of the project. Traffic wanting to access westbound K-10 from Renner or Ridgeview should use College Blvd or Prairie Star Pkwy. The project is expected to be completed by late July.
