About the U.S. 50/83/400 Garden City Bypass Project

Work on the U.S. 50/83/400 bypass in Garden City has begun. The project is a full depth concrete pavement reconstruction due to the age and condition of the existing concrete.  Parts of the bypass were built in 1984 and have exceeded their life expectancy. The bypass carries a high percentage of truck traffic, making it an important commerce route in southwest Kansas and across the state.

Expected improvements include:
  • Replacement of concrete on the bypass from Third Street to the north end of the U.S. 50/Fulton Street interchange (excluding Schulman Avenue);
  • Removal of asphalt from south of Schulman Crossing to the north end of the U.S. 50/Fulton Street interchange;
  • Addition of turning lanes at Campus Drive to facilitate smoother traffic flow in this area;
  • Enhanced lighting at the Fulton Street interchange;
  • Placement of a Dynamic Messaging Sign (DMS) on U.S. 50 east of Campus Drive to advise drivers traveling east and south of road conditions.

Current Traffic Impacts

Phase II began September 4 and the bypass is currently closed from U.S. 50/Fulton Avenue to K-156/Kansas Avenue.

Phase II Detour Route

Southbound traffic will exit at K-156/Kansas Ave.  Take K-156/Kansas Ave. west to Campus Dr and Campus Dr. south to U.S. 50/Fulton Ave.  Then take U.S. 50/Fulton Ave. east to the bypass.

Spruce Street is closed during this phase of construction.
