Metropolitan Planning Organizations

Title 23 of the United States Code dealing with transportation requires communities with a population of greater than 50,000 to have a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The MPO’s are responsible for coordinating the transportation planning efforts for those communities. In Kansas the MPO’s include: the Mid-America Regional Council for the Kansas City area, the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Office, the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Metropolitan Topeka Planning Organization, as well as the St. Joseph Area Transportation Study Organization which serves the northeast corner of Kansas.
