LEAVENWORTH COUNTY

U.S. 73 / K-7 Pavement Replacement Project
Overall project work is scheduled to be completed in late January 2015

24/7 LANE CLOSURES: Northbound and southbound U.S. 73/K-7 from 20th Street to the north junction of Leavenworth County Road 14/Santa Fe Trail will be CLOSED to all traffic beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7 for pavement replacement work. A marked detour will be provided via Leavenworth County Road 14.

PROJECT UPDATE: REOPENING DELAYED. As of TODAY, Tuesday, December 16, the U.S. 73/K-7 pavement replacement and bridge repair project in Leavenworth County will not be completed and will not reopen to traffic in late December 2014, as originally planned. (See original news release below for more project information.) The primary contractor, KOSS Construction, has informed us that they will not be able to complete enough project work to safely open U.S. 73/K-7 to the traveling public this calendar year (2014).

KOSS Construction plans to continue work on the project  through this Friday, December 19. From Friday, December 19, 2014 -Monday, January 5, 2015, KOSS Construction will suspend work on the project for the holiday season. They plan to be back to work on the project on Monday, January 5, 2015, weather permitting.

KOSS Construction plans to complete enough of the pavement work in January to open up the roadway to the traveling public by the end of the month, late January 2015, weather permitting. Once U.S. 73/K-7  reopens to the traveling public, the project will then be suspended for winter shutdown and work will resume in early to mid-April 2015, weather permitting.

Here’s what this means for drivers: The current detour will remain in place through late January 2015. Once the roadway is reopened to unrestricted traffic, the detour will be deactivated until April 2015.  Then sometime in April 2015, the detour will be reactivated and KOSS Construction will resume work on the project until all remaining work is completed. Project work is scheduled to be completed in late January 2015. (REV. 12-16-14)

WYANDOTTE COUNTY

I-70 & K-7 Interchange Project
Overall project work scheduled to be completed in late Fall 2014

TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGE: The new westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 ramp opened to traffic at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22. Since the new westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 loop ramp is now open to all traffic, sometime the week of December 29-January 2, weather permitting, the left turn lanes from the existing westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 ramp will be removed. Westbound I-70 traffic will no longer use this existing ramp to exit onto southbound K-7. At that point in time, the only movements available from the existing westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 ramp will be either right turns onto northbound K-7 or the through lane movement onto Canaan Drive. Once the left turn lanes on the existing ramp are removed, westbound I-70 traffic wanting to access southbound K-7 MUST use the new westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 loop ramp. Project work is scheduled to be completed on Friday, December 26. (REV. 12-23-14)

EXPECT DELAYS! WEEKDAY OVERNIGHT LANE CLOSURES: Westbound I-70 right lane at K-7 will be CLOSED for bridge girder removal work beginning at 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 23 and will reopen to all traffic by 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 24. Project work is scheduled to be completed on Wednesday, December 24. (NEW 12-22-14)

Westbound I-435 from U.S. 69 to I-35

TRAFFIC SHIFT: Westbound I-435 traffic from U.S. 69 to just west of I-35 will be shifted to the south with three through and one auxiliary lane for reconstruction work on the westbound I-435 lanes, 24/7 round the clock, beginning on Thursday, September 4 through late 2014, weather permitting. Crews will begin setting traffic control at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3 and the traffic shift will be in place before morning rush hour on Thursday, September 4, weather permitting.

Westbound I-435 traffic (from U.S. 69 to just west of I-35) will travel through the work zone via three through lanes and one auxiliary lane as follows:

1) Far left lane traffic will travel through the work zone only directed via concrete barrier on either side of the driving lane. Traffic will travel on an 11-foot wide driving lane with an approximate 2-foot left shoulder and 8-foot right shoulder (lane is located in former eastbound I-435 lane/median area).
2) Center lane traffic will travel through the work zone as normal
3) Right lane traffic will travel through the work zone as normal
4) Far right auxiliary lane will be used for traffic wishing to access the U.S. 69, Quivira Road and I-35 interchanges

Advance message boards will alert drivers to the traffic shift. There will be an 11-foot lane width restriction and a 55 mph posted speed limit through the project work zone throughout the project duration. Note: Eastbound I-435 traffic through this area has already been shifted to the south slightly to accommodate the westbound I-435 traffic shift. All ramp access will remain open at the U.S. 69, Quivira Road and I-35 interchanges. Project work is scheduled to be completed in late 2014. (NEW 8-25-14)

KDOT partnered on a city-led project with the City of Overland Park for the U.S. 69 & 159th Street interchange expansion project. This expansion project includes the addition of interchange ramps to the existing intersection at U.S. 69 and 159th Street in Overland Park (Johnson County). The project work zone on northbound and southbound U.S. 69 will extend from 151st Street south to 169th Street throughout the duration of the project.
