I-35 from 151st Street to Santa Fe/135th Street Pavement Reconstruction Project
Overall project work is scheduled to be completed in September 2016

PROJECT TO BE SUSPENDED FOR 2015-2016 WINTER SEASON: Due to weather-related delays, KDOT and Ideker, Inc. are currently working on a revised schedule that will delay the start of Phase Two construction into next year (Spring 2016). Reconstructing both lane directions of I-35 through the project area in one construction season, although very aggressive, was a reasonable expectation and was intended to minimize the impact to the traveling public. Unfortunately, the unprecedented amount of rainfall events that have occurred throughout this construction season have delayed the construction work beyond what could be reasonably anticipated. Because the work is very structured, it limits the contractor’s ability to adjust their scope of work and make up for these delays. The decision to break between phases and go into a second construction season was based on the risks associated with replacing the pavement on the northbound I-35 lanes during the Kansas winter months.

Here’s what this means for drivers > > We are tentatively expecting Phase One construction to be completed by early September 2015 (around Labor Day), at which time traffic will be switched back to its original configuration until work begins again next spring (March-April 2016). This means that northbound I-35 will be shifted back to the existing northbound lanes and southbound I-35 will travel on the newly reconstructed lanes. The Santa Fe Street/135th Street to southbound I-35 entrance ramp and the southbound I-35 to Old U.S. 56 exit ramp will be reopened to all traffic at this time. Advance separate notification will be sent out as the early September phase one completion date nears to alert drivers to the traffic switch back to the normal configuration and the reopening of the ramps to all traffic.

REMINDER: During Phase Two construction, the Santa Fe Street/135th Street to southbound I-35 entrance ramp, the Old U.S. 56 to northbound I-35 entrance ramp, and the northbound I-35 to Santa Fe Street/135th Street exit ramps will be closed. Advance separate notification will be sent out early next year (2016) alerting drivers as to when construction is set to begin again on the project.  Though the project completion date will be extended from the original date of November 2015 to September 2016, weather permitting, it should be noted that the time of traffic impacts will increase by approximately three months overall when compared to the original schedule. Overall project work is scheduled to be completed in September 2016. (NEW 8-5-15)

EXPECT DELAYS! 24/7 RAMP CLOSURES:  Northbound and southbound I-35 from just north of 151st Street to just north of Santa Fe Street/135th Street will have varying lane and ramp closures for reconstruction work beginning on Monday, March 16. Construction will be completed in two phases. Each phase will take approximately four months to complete, weather permitting. During the weeks of March 16-30, crews will begin project work by setting traffic control followed by construction of median crossovers located at either end of the project. Traffic impacts include lane reductions on I-35 and the closure of the Santa Fe Street/135th Street to southbound I-35 entrance ramp throughout the project duration. Ramp closures and lane reductions are tentatively scheduled to begin sometime around Monday, March 30, weather permitting. Phase One. All I-35 traffic will be carried on the existing northbound lanes separated by concrete barrier while the southbound lanes are reconstructed. During this phase, the southbound I-35 to Old U.S. 56 exit ramp will be closed. Southbound I-35 to Old U.S. 56 ramp traffic will detour via the U.S. 169/K-7 exit then north on K-7 to Old U.S. 56. Approximate timeframe for completion work on this phase: April-August 2015, weather permitting. Phase Two. All I-35 traffic will be carried on the newly completed southbound lanes separated by concrete barrier while the northbound lanes are reconstructed. During this phase, the Old U.S. 56 to northbound I-35 entrance ramp and the northbound I-35 to Santa Fe Street/135th Street exit ramp will be closed. Approximate timeframe for completion work on this phase: August-December 2015, weather permitting. Santa Fe Street/135th Street to southbound I-35 ramp traffic will detour via Mur-Len Road south to 151st Street west to I-35 or via Ridgeview Road north to 119th Street east to I-35.  Project work is scheduled to be completed in September 2015. (REV. 8-3-15)

KDOT partnered on a city-led project with the City of Overland Park for the U.S. 69 & 159th Street interchange expansion project. This expansion project includes the addition of interchange ramps to the existing intersection at U.S. 69 and 159th Street in Overland Park (Johnson County). The project work zone on northbound and southbound U.S. 69 will extend from 151st Street south to 169th Street throughout the duration of the project.
