First Lady Linda Graves to speak at first-ever "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day" Oct. 10

Each day, approximately 115 people are killed in motor vehicle accidents across the country. That adds up to more than 41,500 fatalities each year. Making people aware of driving safety and helping them improve it are critical to reducing these alarming statistics. First Lady Linda Graves will be the featured speaker at the first-ever "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day" event set for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Expo Centers Exhibition Hall in Topeka. Events will also be taking place across the country on Oct. 10 to raise awareness of roadway safety. Other speakers include Regional Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Romell Cooks, Federal Highway Administration Division Administrator David Geiger, State Director of the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration Teri Graham, and AAA Public Affairs Coordinator Cherie Sage. Also at the event:

  • The KHPs rollover simulator will show the effectiveness of safety belts;
  • The Safe Kids Van will demonstrate child passenger safety;
  • The FMCSA will have a No-Zone display trailer with highway safety information at the event.
